Shape Tracing Worksheets

Tracing shapes teaches children to change direction smoothly and to close a shape where it began — both important for letters like o, a and d.

Where to start

Best for: Ages 3–6 (preschool to kindergarten) · Time: 5–10 minutes per page

Start with the circle, then the square and triangle. Diamonds, hearts and stars come last because they need sharper turns and longer strokes.

  • Day 1–2: circle and square — practice closing the shape where it started.
  • Day 3–4: triangle and diamond — practice slanted lines meeting at a point.
  • Day 5: heart or star as a reward, then draw the shape freehand on the back of the page.

Tips for shape tracing

  • Name each shape out loud as you trace it.
  • Count the sides and corners together.
  • After tracing, try drawing the shape freehand next to it.
